Construction management is highly sought-after. Anyone who have a bachelor’s or master’s degree are highly sought-after. These degrees are specialized and give you the technical knowledge to interact with design professionals, such as architects and engineers, as well as managerial skills to oversee the skilled tradesmen who perform the actual construction work.
A typical curriculum for a construction degree begins with an exploration course and then progresses to more specific construction courses that provide the necessary technical knowledge to construct a structure from the ground up. You may also learn advanced engineering topics such as modeling and analysis of structural elements. Many programs offer the chance to gain practical experience by working with local companies in real-world projects, or participating in design competitions for students.
In some programs, you’ll work with other students to develop, conceptualize and present a construction project before an audience of judges during your senior year. You can also specialize in certain areas, such as green building or civil engineering and sustainability. The specialized programs prepare you for positions in research and development and design, or estimation and cost control. Doctoral degrees in construction management typically last three to five years long and contain a significant amount of research to be included in your dissertation. Some programs also offer teaching and graduate assistantships to help with your tuition costs.
